Day 5 (Thurs, 20 Mar)

My dad and I rode from Salome, AZ to Wickenburg, AZ today – a generally flat terrain ride ending with 100s of Saguaro Cactus and a highlight of my dad passing 23,000 miles in total on his bike (wow!).  The ride was 54 miles, all of it along US Hwy 60 bringing us from East of Phoenix to just north of the city.  The ride was flat with just 500 feet of climbing.  The weather was again perfect– in the 60s when we left our hotel and mid 70s throughout the day – perfectly sunny the entire day, with no humidity!!  Almost no wind today.  Overall, a very relaxing and scenic ride today through dessert, open fields with mountains on each side of us.

Luke AFB is near Phoenix – they train USAF F-16 pilots there and we saw 4 sets of F-16s that flew over us heading back to their base – the sound of Freedom!

Another great day of riding with my father, ending with a fun 7 mile downhill ride into the historic town of Wickenburg.

On to the pictures!

Open plains northeast of Salome - good riding lanes today and pretty smooth road along Hwy 60.

My dad hitting 23,000 miles on his road bike (he has a ton more on his mountain bike as well).  Congratulations!!!

Not many palm trees in the fields - this one is huge and really stood out; looking a bit out of place.

Old rusty stuff for the day!

Mountains north of Hwy 60, east of Phoenix (about 70-80 miles or so)

The green landscape (which you don't see that often in AZ...) started to occur more often as we came closer to the mountains north of Phoenix (they had rain here a few weeks ago).

Interesting story about the Ehrenberg-Wickenburg stage coach back in the 1800s - we must have taken a similar route to what this once did.

Nice landscaping near a shopping center in Wickenburg.

My dad's brother Allyn lives with his family in the Phoenix area.  He rode his bike up to Wickenburg, with a longer ride, more hills and still beat us into town!  A 3-person "selfie" picture - I need to work on those a bit...

Neat - an old gas station from probably the 50's or so that was likely a main stopping point along Hwy 60 back then before the interstate was constructed and took most all of the LA to Phoenix traffic south of Hwy 60 and Wickenburg.

Our hotel (and some palm trees IN it)

Old fashion movie theater that is still active in Wickenburg.
