Day 6 (Fri, 21 Mar & Sat, 22 Mar)

My Dad, Allyn and I rode from Wickenburg, AZ to Scottsdale, AZ (where Allyn lives) today – a great ride cruising down from Wickenburg into the northern suburbs of Phoenix and into Scottsdale.  The ride was 76 miles, starting on US Hwy 60, then Hwy 74 and finally a number of streets in Carefree and Scottsdale AZ.  The ride was a lot of downhill into the Phoenix area, with just 340 ft of climbing.  The weather was again perfect– in the high 50s when we left our hotel and up to 80 throughout the day – perfectly sunny the entire day, with no humidity!!  Very little wind again today.

Having both my father riding with me on our final ride of his 400 mile trip as well as his brother Allyn made for a special day.  The terrain north of Phoenix is hilly and quite majestic with a wide array of cactus, flowers and rocks.  We finished the ride cruising downhill at 20+ mph from Carefree into Scottsdale – great fun!!!

Small note: my dad and I changed hotels Saturday so we rode from Scottsdale over the Salt River (totally dry in Phoenix except a small lake near ASU) passing by ASU and onto our hotel in Tempe.  This completes the ride my father planned to do – 400+ miles and nearly 14,000 feet of climbing in just 6 days.  A special trip for both of us; one that we’ll each remember for many years to come.

On to the pictures:

Rolling hills just outside of Wickenburg

Mixing in a little video of the landscape.

Lot's of cactus - us Northerners continued to be impressed by how big these are (and likely well over 100 yrs old).

Now that is a set of REALLY experienced cyclists - likely well over 50,000 combined miles ridden in the group (I was the novice in the peleton today - so I got to lead out the pack!!).

Aaaah, back to civilization and the energy drink of champions - iced coffee at McDonald's.......

OK - which way do we go now?

Really awesome homes in Carefree, AZ in the foreground and well up on top of the hill.

Zoom in on the rock formation - looks like a Puma sitting on top doesn't it?

More desert homes.

End of the ride and we thought that (well I did in any case) a Power Rangers-like stance would be appropriate given how fast we flew into Scottsdale today!

The end of a highly memorable 6 days, 400+ miles, 14,000 feet climbed and lots of great conversations trip for my dad and I.  Very Cool!  (where should we go next year?)
